Our Container Design team kicks off every spring season with members of all levels of experience, including “veterans” who pass on the passion and skill that goes into the process we’ve perfected over the years – creating our signature moss baskets, succulent wreaths, porch baskets, and more. Here we share a few of the exciting projects we’re working on as we get ready to help you welcome a colorful spring back to your outdoor space.
Moss Baskets
Every spring, the ceiling of our Greenhouse fills up with hundreds of beautiful hanging moss baskets – overflowing with colorful blooms and botanical textures. And over the years, they’ve become a signature part of spring at our Garden Store. We begin planting the baskets in the winter, but the process really starts the summer before – when container design captain Angie Phillipp draws up the designs so we can let our partner growers know how many baby plants we’ll need. Every combination Angie chooses is a balancing act of color, form, and texture as she creates designs for both sun and shade. And for those who love that classic front-porch look, we also have our beautiful impatiens baskets too.
Our moss baskets may not start as much, but as soon as the plants take off and the blooms start to pop, moss-basket lovers quickly begin reserving their favorites to be picked up in May. Our Container Design team takes custom orders too. If you’re interested, just stop by our desk in the Greenhouse or give us a call before the end of March when moss-basket production ends for the season.
Succulent Wreaths + Spheres
If you visit us in the Greenhouse, you’ll see the results of another planting project that started even before the moss baskets. Back in early February, our team planted hundreds of impossibly cute baby succulents into dozens of moss-filled, wreath- and sphere-shaped planters. These hanging works of art are first on the schedule because succulents take a little longer to grow. Angie says there’s no soil in the wreaths and spheres – just moss – but the little babes thrive and eventually cover the shapes with their beautiful, succulent foliage.
Porch Baskets + Doorstep Containers
Once the annual plants start arriving, the next big project for Container Design begins – creating hundreds of our popular porch baskets. Each woven basket is filled with a beautiful combination of blooming annuals – perfect for setting on the front porch, on a patio table, or next to your favorite chair on the deck. This year, our collection features six styles of baskets – from rustic branches to wire lined with burlap – in a variety of sizes. As more annuals arrive, our designers find new inspirations for a stunning variety of colorful combinations to choose from. And before long, we’ll bring out our spring designs for doorstep containers too.
