Before you visit the store, be sure to measure across the opening of your container so you can choose the size that fits your container best – twelve, fifteen, or eighteen inches. When you get home, simply switch out last season’s fiber pot for your new selection. Or if your blooms are potted directly in soil, just take the summer plants out, create some space in the remaining soil, and drop the new planted fiber pot right in. It’s that easy.
DIY Design
Maybe you think getting those hands in the soil is too much fun to pass up, and you’re excited about all the inspiration that comes with the beauty of fall. In that case, you might want to create your own container design. Right now, the Greenhouse is full of gorgeous mums, popping with rich autumn color perfect for any outdoor planter. You’ll also find purple kale, grasses, heuchera, and more fall favorites to bring a beautiful mix of textures and style to your creation.
If you’re wondering where to begin, a classic combination starts with a bushel basket or fiber slip-pot filled with potting mix and a tall element in the center – like purple fountain grass, a few birch poles, or several stems of curly willow. Surround this element with shorter supporting color like a boldly colored mum, kale, or maybe a vivid coneflower – which doubles as a butterfly magnet, by the way. Then, add a trailing lysimachia to the outer edge to balance the height in the center and complete the design.
But you don’t have to stop there. For a perfect finishing touch, tuck a few lifelike autumn leaves or berries around the edge for a pop of contrasting color and texture. The great thing about fall design is you really can’t mess it up – in the fall, nature is exploding with enthusiasm and so can your outdoor arrangements.
