It’s May, and no doubt you’re ready to relish the warm weather and work on some springtime projects. If you have a shady spot that needs a splash of summer-long color, take a look at one of the four beautiful hydrangeas in our Endless Summer collection – BloomStruck, Blushing Bride, Twist-n-Shout, and Summer Crush. Their gorgeous blooms appear all summer on these easy-care, versatile shrubs.
Versatility
Endless Summer hydrangeas bring bright and cheerful color to shady spots where other flowering shrubs might not bloom as well. Plant these hydrangeas where they’ll see morning sun and dappled shade as the afternoon heat arrives. One hydrangea standing alone makes a lovely specimen within a landscape, but several planted in a grouping makes a beautiful statement too. And because they like consistent moisture in the soil, these hydrangeas are perfect for areas that may stay a little too wet for other shrubs and perennials.
Summer-Long Blooms
In contrast to other cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla, Endless Summer hydrangeas bloom on both old wood and new wood. This means their floral display starts early in the spring – blooming on last season’s growth – and extends into the summer as new stems and flower buds continue to form. As for color and style, each of the four Endless Summer hydrangeas offer something special for your landscape. Summer Crush, BloomStruck, and Blushing Bride produce spherical, “mophead” hydrangea blooms on a nicely rounded, shrub reaching four feet tall and wide and covered with rich, green foliage. BloomStruck also features beautiful purple-red stems and red veins in its dark green leaves. In contrast to the more vivid blues and pinks found in the first two varieties, the blooms on Blushing Bride open in a soft, bridal white that matures to pastel shades. And Twist-n-Shout has a different bloom style from the rest – often called “lacecap” – which gives this variety a lighter and airier appearance.
Adaptable Color
Like all cultivars of the species Hydrangea macrophylla, Endless Summer hydrangeas can produce different bloom colors – from shades of pink to purples and bright blue – depending on the variety and the pH level of the soil. Our native soils tend to be alkaline, so without any additional inputs, most Endless Summer hydrangeas planted in this area produce pink-shaded flowers. Acidic soils on the other hand encourage blue and purple shades instead. If you’d rather see more blues than pinks, you can lower the pH around your hydrangea by adding aluminum sulfate to the soil – you’ll find it in our Garden Supplies area.
