Easy, Beautiful Height in Sun Containers

If creating amazing sun container designs is on your weekend to-do list, then finding the perfect plants to fill them is a top priority. We completely understand – and we’re here to help. For easy and beautiful height in your designs, you can’t go wrong with a 10” tropical hibiscus bush or a classic 10” ravenea palm – and we’re so excited to be able to offer them at the everyday price of just $24.99. Here, we’ll share what we love most about these two sun container favorites.

Tropical Hibiscus for Big Color + Little Fuss

With its big, glossy foliage and vibrant blooms, a tropical hibiscus is a trip to Hawaii in a pot. Each bud unfurls into a beautiful 4-6” flower – attracting butterflies and the occasional hummingbird too. Hibiscus are gorgeous plants on their own, but they also provide bushy height and color in container combinations too. We like to complement the blooms’ vivid colors – ours come in red, yellow, and pink – with the jewel tones in croton, geraniums, coleus, or Sunpatiens. Then, just add something to trail over the side – maybe Algerian ivy, vinca vine, or lysimachia – and your combination is complete. For best flowering, make sure your hibiscus gets 4-6 hours of sunshine every day, consistent water, and regular fertilizer.

Ravenea Palm for Classic Tropical Height

Nothing gives such bold, green height and movement to a container combo like a ravenea palm. Their lush, fluttering foliage is handsome enough to stand in a pot alone. But surround them with loads of blooming annuals and other colorful tropical plants, and you’ll see why this palm is one of the most well-loved of our outdoor tropicals. Some of our favorite sun-loving partners for ravenea palms include croton, mandevilla, geraniums, coleus, calibrachoa, and bacopa. And because ravenea palms also thrive in part-sun – and their arching greenery provides a little extra shade – they work well with New Guinea impatiens, begonias, and a few ferns too.

Get Ready for Planting

Once the nights stay warm, tropical plants like hibiscus and ravenea palms will be ready to go outside and provide dramatic, season-long beauty for your outdoor containers. In addition to these two beauties, you’ll find our flat-top greenhouse filled with all kinds of possibilities for adding height to your containers – bougainvillea, lantana, plumbago, daisy trees, Kimberly Queen ferns, and lots more. If you need suggestions, just ask one of our team members. We’ll be glad to help you find the perfect plants to complete your own container design.
