Renovations + Our Commitment to Omaha

For sixty years, we’ve pursued a passion for making Omaha a more beautiful place to live and work. For us, that means celebrating the natural world and advocating for its place in our built spaces. This ongoing conversation is as important now as it’s ever been. And to continue that conversation, to better reflect our commitment to this passion of ours, and to grow into a stronger community resource for the future, we’re making some changes. They’re exciting changes – and they represent the single largest re-investment in Mulhall’s Garden + Home’s history.

A Chance to Reflect + Push Forward

We’ve been doing this a while. And while we’ve loved being a part of Omaha’s long-standing gardening community, what’s most amazing is seeing how it’s evolved through the years. More apartment-dwellers growing food on their balconies and filling their homes with plants. More gardeners thinking hard about sustainability and what that means for their landscape. People of all ages and backgrounds coming together to share their passion for the natural world. And we’re happy that we can help support that.

Now, as the City of Omaha begins their work revitalizing and widening the intersection of 120th and Maple, we’re excited to think about the same for our property – and our relationship with our community. It’s a chance to take a step back and ask ourselves how our front door can best reflect our commitment to making Omaha a more beautiful, sustainable, and healthy city – and how our store can better make space for partnerships that support this goal. With these questions in mind, we’d love to share about the big changes taking place between now and this fall.

Our Community-Focused Partnerships

For this transformation, we’re partnering with DeOld Andersen Architecture, Olsson, Morrissey Engineering, and McLeay Building Company – four local firms who understand and share our passion for beautifying our community and what that means to us. Leading with a commitment to growth that’s grounded in the fundamentals we value, these incredible partners have taken our ideas and interpreted them into a built environment that fully demonstrates our commitment to plants, people, nature, and the vital need for their coexistence.

Updated Entrances + Parking

Several times a year, our parking lot fills with cars, and lines begin to grow at our registers. It’s an energizing time in the store. But scarce parking and long lines don’t speak to our commitment to the community if our visitors can’t get in the store, shop easily, and get home to their projects in a timely manner.

To start, we’ll have two major entrances – so you can head straight for what you’re looking for. What is now the main, south entrance will become our Home entrance. And what was once our warehouse and Customer Pickup will transform to our new Pavilion with additional registers and an adjacent Garden entrance. There, we’ll have an outdoor space for people to meet, relax, or even grab a bite from a visiting food truck.

The renovations also include re-configuring and expanding our parking area to allow for more spaces and easier navigation. And to keep things running smoothly and efficiently behind the scenes, we’re adding new bays to our receiving dock too.

Faster Pickup for Mulhall’s Pro

In another step toward our goal of being the best resource we can be for our community, we’ve recently launched a new program, Mulhall’s Pro, to better serve our fellow green industry professionals working to bring more beautiful green spaces to Omaha. To support this initiative, our renovations will also include a dedicated staging and loading area for our professional customers.

Collaborative Spaces for Our Team

And in the midst of all this, we have a great opportunity to work toward another of our goals: to become one of the top five employers in Omaha. With that, we’ve thought a lot about how we can create more collaborative and plant-filled spaces for our team members. That includes open offices with standing desks and movable work stations, updated conference rooms, a new break room and personal wellness room, and outdoor meeting spaces.

New Plantings

Surrounding all this will be new plantings to provide not only inspiration for your own projects but an environment where you can enjoy a bit of the natural world right here in the city. As you first arrive, you’ll notice familiar favorites like salvia, hydrangea, and ginkgo. And as you continue to explore our place, you’ll see plants like goldenrod, prairie dropseed, and swamp white oak – plantings inspired by the beautiful Great Plains.

An Evolving Plan

For those who have worked and shopped with us for a long time, this is exciting. It’s going to look different – but it’s thrilling to watch this thing that we’ve loved for so long continue to grow with our vision for the future. It might be a bit noisy around here for a while, but like a new landscape planting, the best is yet to come – and we’re excited to share all of it with you.
