Hanging a basket overflowing with bright blooms and foliage is an easy way to add another level of eye-catching color to any outdoor space. Around here, we have a passion for hanging baskets – and we love helping you find the perfect size, color, and style to take home and enjoy all season long. Here, we tell you about the care we put into our baskets, and we share some of our favorite places to enjoy them. We also have a few easy tips for keeping your basket blooming and beautiful all season long.
Choose Your Favorite Styles
To say we have a passion for hanging baskets is a bit of an understatement. From our signature, handcrafted moss baskets – designed and planted by our own Container Design team – to the popular 12” fiber-pot annual baskets we grow at our farm in Gretna, we truly care about what goes into every hanging basket. That’s because we want you to be successful. And with over 40 styles in our collection – with options for both sun and shade – finding just the right combination of plants and colors to fit your space and style is easy. Look for your favorite blooms and foliage including dragonwing begonias, petunias, geraniums, calibrachoa, impatiens, and coleus. And if you’re not sure what will work, just ask. We’re always glad to talk baskets and help you find just the right one.
Add Layers of Color
Hanging baskets allow you to bring blooms right up to eye-level and add another layer of color and texture to your outdoor space. On your front step, pair your basket with a coordinating planter or doormat for a color-filled welcome your guests will love. On the patio, a well-placed hanging basket or two can create a sense of intimacy by defining separate seating areas or blocking unwanted views. Flowering annuals can also play a big part in pulling together the colors in your space – maybe repeating the same hues found in your outdoor pillows, patio umbrella, or other decorative elements. Hanging baskets can even find their way into the landscape – try suspending one from the branch of a shade tree, or position a shepherd’s hook in a sunny spot and hang a basket that matches your perennial blooms.
Tips for Season-Long Beauty
To keep your hanging baskets full of flowers and foliage all season long, we have a few tips to share.
- Consider your sunlight. Before you choose your basket, think about your space and whether you’ll need a basket for sun or shade.
- Water often. Most hanging baskets – especially in the sun and wind – want to be watered every day. Morning is a great time to water so your plants can be ready for the heat of the day. And on especially hot or windy days, your basket may need a second drink later in the afternoon.
- Give regular trims. Many trailing annuals – like calibrachoa, petunia, and verbena – benefit from regular trimming to keep them full and blooming. Try to remove no more than a third of their length at a time – a trim every couple of weeks will look much better than a drastic “haircut” later in the season.
- Feed your flowers. Annual plants are big eaters – plan to give your basket regular fertilizer throughout the season, or use a granular slow-release fertilizer that feeds for weeks at a time.
- Watch for bugs. To control unwanted pests like aphids and whitefly without harming butterflies and other pollinators, try rinsing your plants with water to reduce the pest’s population. If they’re still hanging around, follow up with an insecticidal spray in the evening when beneficial insects are less active.
