Meet Strelitzia nicolai – White Bird of Paradise

Among our collection of large tropical plants, Strelitzia nicolai – white bird of paradise – is unique. Its big, beautiful form and handsome gray-blue foliage make it one of our favorites, and here we share more about this amazing plant and how you can use it in your own home or outdoor space.

In Its Native Habitat

Strelitzia nicolai grows naturally in coastal forests of southern Africa where it might reach 20-30 feet in height – although grown in a pot, it doesn’t get nearly that big. Its leaf stalks are sturdy enough to support the weight of several tropical birds at once – there to sip nectar and pollinate the plant’s extravagant flowers. Here, in our containers though, a young bird of paradise is not likely to flower – but we get to enjoy its handsome foliage.

A Stunning Statement Plant

On this side of the world, a bird of paradise adds a tropical vibe in our sunny indoor and outdoor spaces. And it’s an easy way to make a big statement. On one hand, its height and its broad, tropical foliage command attention in whatever space it occupies. But, on the other hand, its cool, gray-blue color, gently arching stems, and open, airy form give it a modern appeal. And despite its size, it doesn’t take up a lot of floor-space either. All it needs is really bright light and the chance to dry out between waterings. Its attractive but quietly confident personality works just as well as an accent for sunny outdoor patios too. Outside, it can handle full sun, but really bright indirect light is ideal. And with the summer heat, you’ll have to water it more frequently outdoors.

Height for Container Designs

White bird of paradise also makes a standout statement as the center height in a mixed container with other tropical and annual plants. Its upright habit leaves plenty of room at the base to plant all kinds of combinations. Play on the tropical theme by pairing bird of paradise with other lush tropical foliage plants and bold-flowering annuals like mandevilla, croton, Algerian ivy, Sunpatiens, geraniums, and lantana. Its big, smooth leaves can also provide an interesting textural contrast with smaller-leafed and -flowered varieties like bacopa, calibrachoa, lysimacha ‘Goldilocks,’ and scaevola.
