To kick off the new year, we’re devoting an entire month to celebrating the amazing world of houseplants with everyone who shares that same passion. All through January, we’ve planned an exciting schedule of events and activities in the Greenhouse, on social media, and here on the blog that we think every houseplant enthusiast – both new and experienced – will enjoy.
Welcoming Darryl of @houseplantjournal
We couldn’t be more excited to welcome here to Omaha houseplant expert Darryl Cheng of the popular blog House Plant Journal. You might know him better by his Instagram handle, @houseplantjournal, as he helps fellow plant parents understand that a green thumb isn’t about luck but about being observant and knowing how Mother Nature takes care of her plants.
Join us on January 11th for a special seminar and open Q+A with Darryl. During the event, he’ll also be signing copies of his book, The New Plant Parent: Develop Your Green Thumb and Care for Your House-Plant Family. Tickets are limited, and all proceeds will go to support Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, Department for Plant Conservation and their efforts to save some of the world’s most endangered plants. Be sure to save your seat today!
Our Photo Contest
We’d love to see all the favorites from your own plant family. Now through January 19th, enter your best plant photos in our houseplant photo contest happening over on Instagram! Just tag us in each photo and use the hashtags #mymulhalls and #mulhallsplantcontest for the chance to win a $100 gift card and a featured post over on our blog. Second and third place winners will receive a $50 and $25 gift card too. Once all entries are in, our in-house panel will select the finalists before we open the voting to everyone on January 20th. Tell your houseplant-loving friends too – we can’t wait to see all those beautiful houseplants everyone has at home.
Partnering with Oana Befort
In her stunning illustrations, local artist and freelance designer Oana Befort captures the beautiful forms and colors we see in the botanical world. In celebration of Houseplant Month, Oana has created a special plant portrait for us featuring Maranta leuconeura – the extraordinary prayer plant. Be sure to watch for a special giveaway of this print coming soon. Then on January 18th, we’re excited to welcome Oana back for a hands-on botanical painting workshop using gouache and inspiration from some of our favorite houseplants.
More on the Blog + Social Media
And all through January, we’re celebrating houseplants here on our blog and on social media – be sure to follow us over on Instagram and Facebook to join us. We’ll discuss the care, feeding, and creative potential of all the beautiful plants in your collection. Whether you’re just getting started or you’re already an experienced houseplant parent, you’ll find lots of inspiration and valuable tips for success.
Our Plant of the Week
To celebrate some of our favorite houseplants, we’re pulling one distinguished member of our collection into the spotlight each week in January. You’ll find our plant of the week in a special display in the Greenhouse – and we’ll announce each one by email with more information on our blog about their care and why we love them.
The Houseplant Event
And finally, to wrap up an extraordinary month of houseplant devotion, we invite you to join us on January 25th, from 11:00am to 2:00pm, for The Houseplant Event. It’s an afternoon for learning more about your favorite plants, finding new ones for your collection, mingling with fellow enthusiasts, and more.
While you wander through the plant-filled Greenhouse, grab lunch from our friends at Stirnella Bar & Kitchen and enjoy a delicious cup of handmade ice cream from Coneflower Creamery. Or fuel an exciting day of celebrating houseplants with a glass of organic, cold-pressed juice from The Grove Juicery + Wellness Cafe.
Then at 12:30, join us for the latest edition of our Houseplants 101 seminar series. In this installment, Plant Care team member Terri Loewens will focus on the basics of light and water – the two most critical things to think about when caring for houseplants. And before you leave, be sure to make use of our free Potting Station and stop by our Plant ID Quiz for a chance to win a new baby houseplant for your collection.
January is All about Houseplants
It’s chilly outside – but what a perfect time to celebrate everything we love about our indoor plants. We’re excited, and we can’t wait to connect with you over our shared passion for the strange and beautiful world of houseplants.
