Houseplants for the Holidays

The holidays are here, and that means we get to welcome a whole new collection of beautiful houseplants to the greenhouse. Loaded with color and texture, these festive seasonal favorites spread lots of holiday spirit now and throughout the year.

Amaryllis + Paperwhites

Starting at $0.99

Go from papery bulbs to beautiful blooms in a few easy steps.

Care: Plant your bulbs two-thirds deep in moistened potting mix or set each in a glass container with water just up to (but not touching) the bulb. Keep them in a warm, sunny location until the blooms appear, then move them to a cooler spot to extend their bloom time.

Herb Cones

Starting at $12.99

Fragrant and adorable, rosemary and lavender topiaries bring holiday cheer to your home – plus soothing scents and a little flavor to your favorite recipes.

Care: These plants thrive in bright, indirect light with the chance to dry out just a bit between waterings. Prune them as needed to maintain that perfect Christmas tree shape.

Christmas Cactus

Starting at $2.99

Enjoy a long-lived treasure that reblooms each year – these beautiful plants are often even passed down through generations of families.

Care: Keep yours in a space with bright, indirect light, and let the soil dry slightly between waterings. To encourage new blooms, move it to a cooler spot that gets 14 hours of darkness a day for at least 6 weeks. When the buds form, move your Christmas cactus back to its usual home and keep the soil consistently moist, but well-drained.

Poinsettia

5 Sizes Starting at $4.99

Add tons of color to your home with a classic Christmas beauty – now enjoyed in a range of colors and patterns from red to white to pink.

Care: For the longest-lasting color, set your poinsettia in a space with bright (even direct) light and water when the soil is slightly dry. Be sure to protect it from chilly drafts too. To encourage reblooming next Christmas, keep it in complete darkness (not even a peek) for at least 14 hours a day from early October until late November, then display it as usual.

Norfolk Island Pine

6 Sizes Starting at $4.99

Bring a beautiful evergreen style to your houseplant collection just in time for the holidays.

Care: Set your Norfolk Island Pine in bright, indirect light away from drafts and furnace vents. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and be sure to empty the drain tray. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage even growth as it reaches toward the light.

Cyclamen

3 Sizes Starting at $3.99

Charming colorful flowers float above foliage that’s just as pretty.

Care: These beauties love bright, indirect light away from warm or cold drafts. Water when the soil surface feels dry, and avoid watering the crown which can rot when it’s wet – or instead, water from below.

Before You Go

Holiday houseplants may remind you of winter, but that doesn’t mean they can tolerate the seasonal chill in the air. Whether you find a favorite for yourself or give one away to a plant-loving friend on your gift list, be sure to stop by our Information desk in the Greenhouse before you leave. There, we’ll add a decorative foil pot-cover if you like. And to protect it from the cold, we’ll wrap your plant in a cozy paper sleeve for the trip home.
