Our Greenhouse Assistant Team Leader, Bob Ewing, is also our resident backyard bird expert. We all go to him if we need to identify a bird at one of our feeders or need suggestions to attract a particular species. He always has great advice. One of Bob’s favorite ways to attract a variety of birds is to provide them with the kind of food and shelter they can easily recognize: native plants. And Bob has a lot of native plants.
When we decided then to create a new seminar series all about promoting nature in urban spaces, we came to Bob. As part of our Backyard Naturalist series, Bob will first explore the use of native plants in our landscapes – and not just for drawing in more birds. Because they’ve evolved within our unique Nebraska ecosystem, native plants bring a number of benefits to our urban gardens – from supporting birds and pollinators to thriving with very little fuss. Beyond that, they also represent the beautiful combination of textures and colors that makes up our Midwest landscape. In this seminar, Bob will show lots of examples of native plants and share what makes each of them so special.
We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, September 16th at 10am to find out more about these amazing plants – just give us a quick call at 402-496-0700 to let us know you’ll be here. And keep an eye out for more information about the next seminar in our Backyard Naturalist series when Bob will talk in more depth about other ways to provide a bird-friendly landscape.
