3 Ways to Connect with Nature + Why it Matters

Nature has a way of grounding us – of bringing a sense of calm into our lives. Whether it’s on a walk around a local trail, in our own backyard, or even right within our homes, connecting with the natural world has measurable benefits for our health and well-being. And with Earth Day coming up this month, we invite you to look for more ways to connect with the natural world around you. Here, we share a few of the ways we love to enjoy all the good things nature brings.

Grow a Garden

The planning, planting, tending, and anticipation that go along with growing an herb and vegetable garden are what make this hobby such a rewarding one. And it’s a hobby with a purpose too – not only do you reap the benefits of being in the fresh air outdoors, you also get the delicious and nutritious harvest in the end. Don’t worry about the size of your yard either – beautiful gardens can sprout in the most limited spaces.

For helpful tips and advice, The Big Garden and City Spouts have teamed up to present the Urban Ag School. This series of gardening workshops is now available live online and includes topics like spring planting, soil health, container gardening, and more.

Surround Yourself with Houseplants

Some of the most intriguing plants on earth can be found sitting right next to us in our indoor spaces too. If you have them at home, you’ve probably already experienced the benefits houseplants provide to your home’s aesthetics and even your well-being as you spend time around them and tend to their needs.

In January, we were so excited to have houseplant guru Darryl Cheng at the store to share his practical and plant-based approach to living and interacting with houseplants. And if you don’t have a houseplant to love already, now is a great time to bring home your first one.

Go Out + Explore

Getting outside is important – especially if you’re feeling a bit cooped up. Exploring the variety of natural habitats that exist in and around our communities not only benefits our physical and emotional well-being, it also raises our awareness and appreciation for the unique climate and community of plants, insects, and other animals that surrounds us. When we’re not taking care of plants at the store, our team loves to explore our local natural areas. There are lots of beautiful places to visit right here in the metro area.

If you decide to investigate some of these locations, it’s a good idea to check ahead of time to see if they’ve limited their hours or access right now.
