The Houseplant Event in our Greenhouse this past Saturday was so much fun, and we have all you amazing plant people to thank for that. Your enthusiasm filled the place with such an infectious, positive energy that everyone forgot it was still January outside. Thank you to everyone who joined us – we had so much fun seeing you all there!
Plant People Are a Happy Bunch
As we spent the day celebrating our favorite houseplants – and the special relationships we build with them – the entire Greenhouse was filled with activity. Our team enjoyed answering questions and offering suggestions, but even more gratifying was seeing you all swapping tips and stories in the impromptu groups that formed around your favorite varieties. The sunny day outside warmed up the Greenhouse too and made the day even more enjoyable for everyone – houseplants included.
Exciting New Plants for Everyone
As many of you perused the Greenhouse tables looking for something new to add to your collections, we were excited to match so many gorgeous plants with enthusiastic people ready to take them home. Among some of the most hard-to-find plants in our collection, Calathea musaica, attracted a constant crowd – not surprising with that fascinating variegation. The sansevierias maintained their status as our most popular group, but the jewel orchids and tillandsia were right in the mix too. Seemed like every plant group had its own devoted following to check them out.
The Potting Station was a popular stop during the event too. So many of you saved the time and mess of potting up your new plant at home by getting that task out of the way while you were here. We saw a few kids getting in on the fun right along with the adults. Getting your hands in the soil is good mid-winter therapy for everyone.
Our Houseplants 101 Kick-Off
Plant Care team member Terri Loewens looked out on a standing-room-only crowd as she led the first of this year’s Houseplants 101 seminars, Light + Water. Surrounded by beautiful plants and an attentive crowd, Terri shared tips that plant parents – new and experienced – could take away and immediately use to better understand their houseplants and find success with their collections at home. Light + Water was the first in a series of seminars that will dive into a range of houseplant care topics like repotting, propagation, and more. Look for more details about our upcoming seminars over on our events page.
We Ate Well Too
Special thanks go out to our community partners who helped us celebrate too. Stirnella brought a delicious selection of fresh salads and wraps – and those jalapeno-popper-deviled-eggs are still coming up in conversation around here. The Grove Juicery brought refreshing cold-pressed wellness juices that were fantastic too. In fact, Tropical Plant Buyer Jasmine Osten was able to pair a beet juice drink with a beet wrap from Stirnella for a wonderfully healthy lunch combination. And Coneflower Creamery served their incredibly popular handmade ice cream to round out the afternoon with the perfect sweet snack too.
Our Photo Contest Winners
Now that the votes are all in, we’d like to congratulate Rachel Grahovac of @plantedinomaha for taking first place in this year’s Houseplant Photo Contest on Instagram. We can’t wait to share more about her amazing plant collection on the blog soon. Congrats as well to our second and third place winners, Mandi Barker of @flora_et_lapis and Alycia Cooper of @thebunnyandthebear. Thanks again to everyone who participated in the contest – we loved seeing all your beautiful plant collections and sharing so many of your photos at the event.
Let’s Grow the Conversation
The Houseplant Event was the perfect way to wrap up our celebration of Houseplant Month and to share our passion with so many likeminded plant enthusiasts. But the houseplant conversation doesn’t stop here. If you’re now looking at a few new plants to care for – some familiar, some not so much – don’t hesitate to reach out. Stop in anytime or shoot us a message on Instagram or Facebook. Talking plants is our favorite thing to do, and we’re happy to help if you ever have questions.
