Fall Perennial Planting Guide for Nebraska Gardens

Most perennials should be planted by late September in Nebraska to allow enough root establishment before frost, though some hardy varieties can go in as late as mid-October. Below is a breakdown of which perennials to prioritize now, and how timing shifts depending on the plant.

Why Fall Planting Works for Perennials

Fall’s cooler air and warm soil let perennials focus on building roots instead of top growth — the same principle behind fall tree and shrub planting, just on a tighter timeline. Perennials have less time than woody plants to establish before frost, which is why timing matters more here than with trees or shrubs.

Plant These First – Longer Root-Establishment Window Needed

Coneflower, black-eyed Susan, and Russian sage benefit from going in earlier in the fall window, ideally by mid-September – they need more time to root in before dormancy sets in.

These Can Go in a Bit Later

Sedum, hosta and daylily are more forgiving and can tolerate a later planting date. They can typically go in through early-to-mid October, making them a good choice if you’re planting later in the season.

Ornamental Grasses

Most ornamental grasses, including little bluestem and switchgrass, establish well in fall but do best when planted on the earlier side of the window. Their root systems take longer to settle in than smaller perennials.

Planting and Care Tips

Water deeply at planting, then continue watering through fall until the ground freezes – perennials need consistent moisture to establish roots even as temperatures drop. Leave foliage intact through fall and winter rather than cutting it back; that’s a spring task once new growth begins, and the old foliage helps insulate the crown through winter. Skip fertilizer at planting time, since the goal is root growth, not new top growth.
