Summer Container Recipes

Containers are great for adding colorful focal points to your landscape. Be creative. Just about anything can become a container to hold your favorite annual mixes. When pulling together your container, keep in mind its environment. Will it be exposed to full sun or shade? Anything that gets more than six hours of sun is considered full sun and anything with four hours or less of sun is considered shade.

When picking your container’s site, consider your plants’ exposure to wind and rain. Tall plants in windy areas may need to be staked to stabilize the plant and even though it rains your plants may not be getting enough water. Is your container under a tree or an overhang? Containers need to be watered thoroughly (until water runs out the bottom of the container). Make sure to check the soil, even on the rainy days. A fast way to check if your plant is thirsty is to stick your finger in the soil up to your second knuckle. If your finger comes out with dark soil around it, it’s wet. If it’s clean, then you need to water.

Depending on the type of container you choose, it’s a good idea to line it before you add your soil. Some good choices are burlap, a clear trashbag (with small holes punched in it) or coco liner. Just make sure that water will drain out of whatever you use. Most glazed, ceramic, or terra cotta pottery does not need lining.

It’s important to choose the proper growing medium for your plant’s best performance. Never use a potting soil in your container always use a potting mix. Potting soil can contain fillers (i.e. gravel, clay soil) that make it difficult for the roots to expand while potting mix is lighter and has products in it that help keep the soil aerated allowing for better root growth and water and fertilizer absorption.

Now you are ready to plant! Below are a couple of examples of containers that are easy to make, but full of impact.
