Mulhall's Planting Method For Seeding a New Lawn

  1. The ideal fall seeding time is approximately August 15 through September 30. The ideal spring seeding time is April 15 through May 30.

  2. The area to be seeded should be weed free. If weeds exist, spray with Glysophate. This will kill all existing weeds and grasses within 10 to 14 days. Seeding can take place after vegetation has shriveled and no longer is green in color.

  3. Make sure ground is level and has good drainage. If it does not have good drainage amend soil with organic matter. Turn a lawn starter fertilizer into the top 2-4" of soil. Then rake to level.

  4. Apply seed using spreader and following the rates listed on the chart. Then cover the seed with approximately ½" of organic matter such as top soil, peat moss or compost.

  5. Water the seedbed 5-10 minutes at least twice a day to keep the bed consistently moist until it is established. On hot and windy days you will need to water more.

  6. When mowing never remove more than 1/3 of the plant at any time. Always keep the mower blade very sharp.

  7. The new turf is fairly established in 4-6 weeks and roots will not allow you to pull it up. Established turf requires 1 to 1½ inches of water per week. The watering should be divided between two applications.

Sodding a New Lawn

  1. Follow steps A, B & C under seeding a new lawn.

  2. Lay sod ensuring it is even and there are no air pockets. Be sure to work the edges of the sod together.

  3. Keep sod evenly moist until it is rooted and resists being pulled up.
