Butterfly GardeningAs you read this pamphlet you will learn how to attract a variety of butterflies to your yard. The plants listed will provide nectar for the adult stage, feed the caterpillar stage, and encourage adults to lay eggs in the garden. Planting for all stages of butterfly development will increase the number of butterflies in your garden. This also means you must expect an occasional chewed plant, but it is worth it. Think of it as a long-term entertainment value.Sunny areas sheltered from winds, with a mixture of plants, rock and watering stations create the ideal environment. Plants for food and nectar, rock (or brick) for sun bathing, and shallow containers with sand or small rock containing water are also necessary. Avoiding insecticides that damage lepidoptera is a must. Using beneficial insects to control outbreaks of problem insects is a better choice. Plan your garden for a mixture of blooms in spring, summer and fall. This will enhance the varieties of butterflies and the length of time they stay in your yard. Below is a list of plants for all stages of development and shelter.
